3x Thursday: 6/26/y2k+3: A series of firsts

1. What was your first real (no, it doesn't have to be a winblows box) puter in the 1990s? What did you use up until then? What do you use now?
My first puter in the 90's -- that would have been a 386sx machine with 2mb of memory and 40mb drive that I compressed to be 80mb --w00p! I worked all summer to afford it and think my father ended up paying an extra $200 on top of what I had cause I was short -- but what a computer. Let me think -- that would have been in 1992.

I used an 8088 until then -- it was all decked out with 640kb of memory, 2 20mb HD's and a 5.25 floppy. It had an EGA card from ATI and a fancy NEC MultiSync monitor that I used until it died in 1999.

2. What was your first (or one of your first) experiences with the internet? When was it?
My first experience with the internet was in December of 1993. Our High School had "dial-up" accesss into a Unix system that dropped you at a # prompt. I had a printout of how to use lynx, gopher, and a program called pine. I still think Pine was the best mail editor ever developed -- it was so fast and eficient! Lynx (aka text based web browser) sucked ass compared to Gopher which I absolutely loved.

I learned *nix OS's by forcing myself to understand what was going on with this system -- and by asking stupid questions via 'talk' and 'ytalk' to other users on the system.

3. What piece of software have you been using the longest? Why do you still use it?
Cakewalk -- I've had a copy of it since 1987 -- thats gotta make me one of their oldest customers! I started out with Cakewalk for Dos, moved to Cakewalk for Windows when Windows 3.1 came out, and now use Cakewalk Sonar -- their latest music sequencer. It still kicks ass.

I have to change the shortcut keys whenever I reinstall though -- I learned the DOS keys and they stuck with me. They since changed the defaults and you know what they say about teaching an old dog new tricks...

Bonus Question for Comments: Regardless of what you use now, what's your favorite o/s? Why? Is/was it easy to use? If you could (if you haven't already), would you go back to it?
My favorite o/s would have to be BeOS -- it's no more but it sure kicked ass while it was out. At least for audio/video related projects. If it was still supported then I would probably go back to it -- but since it's been sold off to Palm and they aren't doing crap with it then it's buhbye for me!

3x Thursday

So M took over the 3x thursdays from the personage that was doing it before. I thought that since she was doing them now that I'd go ahead and do them (when I remember that is)...

So...
3x Thursday: 6/19/y2k+3: History Lesson
1. What's your favorite decade or time period in the past 150 years? Why?
Past 150 years? Lets see -- that would make it back through 1853 if my calculator punching was correct...
Sometime in the 20's I think. The classical music styles were changing so rapidly, arts in general were very "alive", technology, while not as advanced as it is today was jumping by leaps and bounds. It had to have been interesting!

2. If you could live in any time period in history, which would it be? Where would you live? What would you do?
Baroque. Baroque cause of the music and art. It was way groovy. Well tempered instruments were just being developed and the architecture was way kewl.

3. Who is your favorite person in history? What did they do that was groovy enough for you to admire them so much?
This one is hard. Favorite person.
Wow, that's a great question. Tough one, though. What does one gage his response on? Physical prowess? Keen detection skills? The ability to banter well with super villains?
I think that I can't answer this as there is no single person who I'd want to "hang" with -- there are just too many of 'em!

New Template

Finally got off my lazy ass and finished the new template. I'm still not 100% happy with the colors -- but those are easy enough to change in the style sheet.

Ahhh well -- I'm sure I missed some pages somewhere -- but for the most part all of the pages are done. Let me know if you see any wierd behavior or something not working.

*yawn*
Good day of climbing today and yesterday -- they set new bouldering routes so there are LOTS of new climbs -- some fun -- some hard -- some not so fun but hard. All of 'em are enjoyable to climb.

Wierd Google Happenings

So I've been getting wierd responses to postings that I had MONTHs ago -- thats kewl and all, but it made me start wondering what people were searching for on Google that was making them find my site.

With a little bit of luck and some quick google searches, look where I show up when you look for such important things as:
Crystal Reports Sucks
Sobe Drink
Male Anatomy Questions

While thats kewl and all, I get some wierd posts.
And while we're on the subject, Crystal Reports STILL sucks ass.

Good Tuesday

Well -- at least after work it was a good tuesday.
I hit the gym early today -- Missy started some swim class on tuesdays and thursdays for the next month. So I'll be going in on my Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7ish until 9.

Tuesdays, Kevin works the front desk. He's such a great climber with sooooo much energy -- it rubs off on everyone around.

So I warmed up, hopped on a V4 that I've been working for about 2 weeks now and got about 2 moves into it and it just didn't feel good. This was after not feeling like anything was going to go earlier in the day -- I just didn't think I was feeling strong while I was at work.

I saw Paul work the first couple moves on a new top-roping route that Kevin set. It's a 5.11b and now that I've climbed it, I'd have to say it's TOTALLY classic. The opening moves are very bouldery -- not your typical top-rope route type moves. Even at 5.11b. The ending was also quite wierd -- it was WAY fun tho. Thanks to Paul for giving me a belay!

Then it was back to the bouldering routes again -- after a good LONG rest. So I warmed back up on a couple V1's and was feeling strong so I headed over and gave the V4 another shot. I got to the last hold and slipped off so I sat down and just stared at the route. Kevin came back and wanted to show me another route he had made up so I hopped on the V4 once more so I could give it "just one more try" before moving on to the other route. I went through the beginning nice and smoothly -- hit the heel hook, bumped out to the sloper -- all was going good. Next was the super hard move with a serious drop knee letting you suck into the overhanging wall even more. You pop up to a little edge and if you can stick that you can hit the last hold. So with an encouraging crowd below I stuck the little sloper edge that had eluded me the past several tries and *bam* I was at the top. Talk about a rush!

So then I hopped on the route that Kevin (and Alden(?)) had made up. It was a sick V3ish route using the icky naturals that they have over the "roof" part of the bouldering area. Long reachy moves to a teeeeeeny crimper hold and then a bump up to the first natural. I hit it after a couple tries and slid off -- it's the second time in a week that I've scraped my fingers sliding off a hold -- the last one being on Sunday when I was out at the coast.

After working it a couple more times I got the feetwork down and managed to top it out. It was a VERY good night'o'climbing.

Furniture Woes

So I actually paid moneys and bought a new table for home -- one that would hold my computer and my full size keyboard. I figured it was about time to get a real "workstation" and Musician's Friend had a "build-your-own" table on sale.

So I bought it.

After fedex "lost" it for a couple days, it showed up at my office (where I had it shipped) in a completely trashed box. I took it home yesterday with some help from Jason and was going to put it together today. I actually *cleaned* my office -- that is very rare -- I pulled everything out and vacuumed the floor before starting on the assembly.

I cleaned for 2 hours and then opened up the trashed box to start assembly. One of the corners of the bottom piece of the desk had been scratched up but I figured I could ignore that as it was a back corner. I pulled out all the pieces and noticed that I was missing two of the four casters that were supposed to be in the box. So I decided to go over the manual and look at what parts were supposed to be in the box. There were about 10 other items (including ALL screws) that were missing.

So now I'm waiting another week (?) for them to send me a new one. I won't know anything for sure until Monday whe Musicians Friend and FedEx are supposed to call me and let me know whats going on.

How annoying!!!!!!!

Template Done?

So I think I finished the template for redoing the main blog page tonight. Had a little more css optimizations left to do -- actually now that I think about it I can shrink the css quite a bit more with a wee bit more work. But at least the layout is now finished.

w00p!
Check out the final layout!
